Dental Implants Step 2

Stage 2: Exposing the Implants

When the implants osseointegrate (become firmly fixed in the bone), you are ready for the second stage.

During the second stage

 graphic The second stage usually lasts less than two hours, and normally only requires a local anesthetic. When the anesthetic takes effect, the dentist makes an incision to expose the tops of the anchored fixtures. All tissue remnants are cleaned from fixtures, and the surgeon confirms that all posts have completely osseointegrated. Occasionally, an implant does not osseointegrate and must be removed.

The titanium posts (abutments) are attached with screws to the implants. X-Rays are then taken to check the condition of the osseointegrated implants and to confirm the exact seating of the abutment posts.

Sometimes your old denture can be fitted with a soft liner to fit over the abutments. This may be done by either the dentist or surgeon. At other times, smooth caps are placed over the implants for comfort until the gums have completely healed. The final abutments are placed into the implants a few weeks later.

After the second stage

Afterwards, you will rest for a period while biting on gauze to help stop any bleeding. You may be given prescriptions for antibiotics and for pain medication. You should also schedule your next appointment.

At home, you should continue to eat soft foods and follow your doctor's instructions for oral hygiene. Remember that proper care helps prevent infection and aids healing.

Resuming normal activities

You may be able to resume work the next day. You may see your oral surgeon a few days after the procedure to check for proper healing. About a week afterwards, the dentist may fit the old denture with a new lining. The old denture with the new lining may be worn until the new teeth are received from the dentist.

Symptoms to report immediately

Call your surgeon or dentist if:

  • Your jaws continue to swell after the first 24 hours:
  • You have a fever;
  • You have pain in your jaws, mouth or sinuses that is unrelieved by the prescribed pain medication.
  • You have any questions.
