Abstract

Objectives: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) weakens the human immune system. Patients will be more susceptible to opportunistic diseases when they have a CD4 cell count below200 cell/µL. Amongst the oral manifestation recognised in patients with AIDS are candidiasis, periodontal disease, and xerostomia. The purpose of this  study was to describe and analyse the oral manifestations in patients living with HIV in South Kalimantan between January and May2019

Methods: This study was based on a descriptive analysis with cross sectional design. The data was obtained by historical study, clinical, and medical record examination. The result was analysed by SPSS.

Results: A Chi-square test showed no significant correlation among CD4, age, gender, marital status and duration of antiretroviral treatment towards xerostomia (p>0.05). There was no significant correlation between age, gender, and marital status towards candidiasis (p>0.05). That was a significant correlation between the CD4 cell count and the duration of antiretroviral treatment towards candidiasis (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between age, gender, marital status and duration of antiretroviral treatment towards periodontal disease (p>0.05). But therewas a significant correlation between the number of CD4 cells and periodontal disease (p<0.05).

Conclusions: There is a correlation between candidiasis and the CD4 cell count as well as the duration of ARV treatment. There was also a correlation between periodontal disease and the CD4 cell count.
